Before knowing how a toilet flushes work, we must know about the types of the toilet. Why? Because, each type of toilet has different flushing mechanism. In addition to dual flush toilets, there are siphon toilet and flap valve system. Before the dual flushing mechanism, the siphon toilet and flap valve system were popular.
We will basically discuss how all these 3 types of toilet work. Except the dual flush toilets, the rest two types used a ball-cock system. Using this system, water level in the cistern was maintained and the lever on the sides was used to operate the flush mechanism. Learn more about these toilets from Relief In Bath.
Let’s first talk about how the flush system of siphon toilet works. In the cistern, there was a siphon to supply water to the toilet bowl and another siphon used in the bowl to clear the liquid and solid waste from the bowl. The S band used to play a huge role to drag to waste from the bowl to the soil pipe. Sounds complex, right?
But the flap valve system is a really simple flushing mechanism. The lever of the cistern was used to open the bottom part of the cistern so that water could flow down to the toilet bowl. Easy enough?
Did you get the main problem of the siphon based flush? They flush down the same amount of water for the liquid and solid waste. That’s a huge waste of water. The problem is severe in the drought prone country like the Australia and USA.
Whereas the siphon based flush has only 1 button, the dual flush toilet has 2 buttons for two types of waste: liquid and solid. For water-savings capacity, dual-flush toilets are not most popular.
Recent development in the cistern design has made it possible to use two buttons on single cistern. Since the trapway diameter is larger than other toilet types, waste exit the bowl much easily requiring less water. Besides, the wash down flushing design always keeps pushing down the waste to the drain.
